In "The Southern Vampire Mysteries" (Also known as the Sookie Stackhouse stories/chronicles; TV known as True Blood) there are many different races other than the Vampire, Shifters, and Witches-- among others. There are many divisions of 'Weres' as they will be discussed and identified here.

WEREWOLVES
Within the shapeshifting and weres community, the term "Were" is only reserved for the wolves. The Weres consider themselves superior within the shapeshifters, but they all cooperate with each other. Most of the two-natured beings organize themselves into packs; each pack is led by a packmaster.[/blockquote][/li][/ul]
In this Universe the way that a pure werewolf is created is if their parents were full/pureblooded werewolf. The product of their offspring will be able to change at will into a wolf, the size and kind depending on the parent's lineage. If a person is bitten or scratched by a Were in their wolf form the person will turn into half-man, half-wolf being that will only be able to change during the three night period of the Full Moon.
- If a parent is a shifter (full blooded) and a Were (full blooded) then the resulting child will be able to transform on a Full Moon.
- The packmaster of current is Colonel John Flood and is based in Shreveport.
- When a pure Were family produces a child their first born will be the only child to be a Were. The second child will be human.

Not too much is known about the pristine creatures. They are elegant, proud people who are able to transform when they like if they are the product of parents who are full Weretiger. It is unknown if there are any taking up residence in Bon Temps but a character in the books goes by the name of John Quinn. His eyes are a brilliant purple who can, and we assume the rest, can heal a cut the same a vampire can by licking the wound.

WEREPANTHER

The main area in which Werepanthers are located is in Hotshot, Louisiana and they are headed by Calvin Norris. The area is known for it's inbreeding as they want to keep werepanthers coming out every which way. They are selective in who they pick as well. The key hunting time for the panther, as well as the other shifters, is during the Full Moon. The Weres begin to feel restless and are more able to give into their more animalistic urges.

Shifters
Shifters, in this universe, are alike and yet different to the Weres. They are able to take on the form of animals, any kind that they like. However they mostly take on an animal they have an affinity for. Example from the show is Daphne. She transformed into the large pig because it held a tie in to her loved, Mary Ann. But as we saw she was able to shift into a fawn at will.
Shifters are created by birth. In this universe, a were child (who will transform at the full moon) can be conceived when the parents are a shifter and a werewolf, but only pure couples (both Weres or both shifters) conceive children that can change at will. Shapeshifting conditions manifest in puberty.
Unlike vampires that have announced their existence to the world, the two-natured beings still maintain their secrecy.
